A strip of fabric, hung a few inches above the floor, may be more effective than many high-tech gadgets at quieting a kitten’s nervous system at night. In controlled settings, kittens resting in shallow hammocks showed lower circulating cortisol and more stable heart rate variability compared with those on flat bedding, according to recent behavioral physiology work.
The counterintuitive point is simple. Less space makes young cats feel safer. Ethologists argue that the hammock recreates the ancestral den, a confined hollow where pressure along the flanks signaled safety from predators and drafts. That gentle compression, combined with the hammock’s slow oscillation, appears to stimulate mechanoreceptors in the skin and deepen activation of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system, the circuitry associated with rest-and-digest states rather than vigilance.
Equally striking is how little motion is required. A few millimeters of sway, produced by the kitten’s own shifting weight, were enough to alter sleep architecture, increasing time spent in non-rapid-eye-movement stages linked to tissue repair and memory consolidation. Researchers liken the effect to a crude vestibular intervention: by providing predictable, rhythmic input to the inner ear and proprioceptive system, the hammock dampens arousal signals that would otherwise keep a young animal on alert. In the dark, that small moving cradle functions as a portable cave.
