Empty sand tells a bolder story than crowded sand. When loungers are spaced in regular, widening intervals, the visual system grabs those objects as anchor points and feeds them into familiar depth cues such as linear perspective and size constancy, making the shoreline appear to recede far beyond its actual boundary. Fewer items, carefully aligned, lower what psychologists call visual clutter, so the eye glides along the coast instead of being stopped by dense clusters of shapes and colors.
Soft dusk lighting then finishes the trick. By dimming lamps and avoiding harsh contrast, designers blunt high-frequency detail that would normally reveal the last umbrella, the back wall, or the parking lot. Rod-dominated low-light vision, with reduced color acuity and weaker edge detection, lets horizons blur and gaps fill in, so the brain defaults to amodal completion and simply extends the shoreline in imagination. The result is not fantasy but a controlled bias in spatial perception: a narrow, quiet strip of sand that, to a relaxed visitor, feels like it runs on without end.
