A winter sunrise does not gently illuminate a cathedral dome; it weaponizes geometry against the eye. Low above the horizon, the sun sends light at a shallow angle that scrapes across curved metal, so the dome behaves less like ornament and more like a giant directional mirror locked onto the bright strip of sky near the sun.
The visual trick starts with gold itself. Thin gold leaf shows high specular reflection and low scattering, so instead of diffusing light, the surface bounces a tight, intense highlight toward specific viewing angles, while its high reflectance in the yellow and red bands exaggerates the warm part of the spectrum. Cold air then joins the act. With reduced water vapor and fewer aerosols, atmospheric attenuation shifts, cutting much of the blue and letting red and orange wavelengths dominate the beam that hits the metal.
The result is oddly one sided. Shadowed masonry and uncoated stone remain governed by Lambertian reflection, sending out soft, weak light in many directions, while the dome fires back a concentrated, almost saturated patch of brightness. Human visual adaptation and simultaneous contrast amplify this imbalance: the retina, adjusting to the dim façade, interprets the compact, warm highlight as a self-luminous source, so the dome reads not as an object under sunlight but as a vessel lit from its own hollow core.
